I was at an all-female bible study tonight and the question was asked; why did Jesus choose to reveal himself to Mary Magdalene first, before anyone else?  It was noted that in those days women did not hold positions of prominence in the church and so this act seemed to be of some cultural or religious significance.

I haven’t read what theologians have to say on the matter or what bible commentators theorize and I don’t mean to get philosophical but here’s my thought… What if he appeared to her first because she went looking for him?  Yes she went to anoint his body with sweet oils and spices as was the custom of the day, but it still follows, she went looking for him.   In Jeremiah 29:13 (I know I skipped 29:11 – everyone’s favorite verse) He tells us “You will seek me and you will find me when you seek me with your whole heart”.

Someone in the bible study commented that anointing Jesus’ body was Mary Magdalene’s final act of devotion to a savior who had done so much for her and who she loved”.  No doubt this was a wholehearted act of service on Mary Magdalene’s part.  She was the beneficiary of many of His miracles of deliverance and was witness to many others.  No doubt she found delight in His presence.   We have a promise in Psalm 37:4, that if we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts.  I believe Mary Magdalene desired earnestly to have one more cherished encounter with the Lord and the faithful God we serve, who looks at the heart honored her sincere desire.

What if the only thing keeping us from experiencing God’s presence, will, favor, miracles, peace, revelations, is our refusal to go searching for Him?  Through study of the word, through prayer and fasting, fellowship in unity with other believers – he can be found in all these.  We have an assurance in scripture that “…those who seek the Lord, will lack no good thing”.  “The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him”.  What good things are we denying ourselves when we fail to seek an awesome God who desires to give us the Kingdom?!
